Attention Education Majors
If you are an education major attending Penn State University or any other college, intending to teach in a school anywhere in the state of Pennsylvania you should be aware of the following statute. The law provides that no person shall be employed in a public or private school, intermediate unit or area vocational-technical school if a criminal history record indicates that the person has been convicted within five years of any of the following offenses:
- Endangering the welfare of a child
- Corruption of minors
- Obscenity
- Harassment or stalking
- Kidnapping or unlawful restraint
- Prostitution
- Aggravated assault
- Indecent exposure
- Indecent assault
- Aggravated indecent assault
- Statutory rape
- Rape/sexual assault and related offenses
- Sexual abuse of children
- Involuntary deviate sexual intercourse
- Incest
- Dealing in infant children
- Concealing the death of a child
- Criminal homicide
- Felony charges under the Controlled Substance Drug Device and Cosmetic Act
- Out-of-state or federal offenses similar to those crimes listed above
Therefore, if you are an education major charged with any of the above-listed offenses and you either plead guilty or are found guilty, you will not be able to teach for a period of at least five years. Any education major charged with any criminal offense and in particular those listed above must be very careful in how their case is handled and the eventual outcome. Some charges may prevent you from getting a license to teach in the state of Pennsylvania.
